Gutfeld vs. Levy

January 7th, 2012

Red Eye

The 5 on Fox News at 5pm Eastern has all but taken Greg Gutfeld away from Red Eye. Maybe it’s because he was on vacation this week but it is starting to seem like Andy Levy has taken over the hosting job.

There are definite differences between the styles of the two hosts. Gutfeld is like William F. Buckley Junior on acid. He uses very creative analogies that come out of left field but hit home. Take this “Gregologue” for example:

Greg Gutfeld makes politics fun. He doesn’t protect his personal image at the expense of his comedy. The only line he seems unwilling to cross is one that jeopardizes Fox News. Gutfeld can turn any topic into a fantastic journey about a world of lemurs, unicorns and blood, so much blood. Gutfeld seems to revel in the character he has created which makes it even more hilarious.

When Andy Levy started hosting Red Eye it was awkward. The audience is so used to Greg that Andy was out of place in the position. After a few weeks of hosting, Andy’s hosting skills improved. Levy has a different style. He has a very quick wit and a clever way of looking at things. However, Andy Levy is unwilling to cross lines that Gutfeld so willfully ignores. It seems that Mr. Levy is looking ahead to his next job where Gutfeld is on a collision course to personal destruction. Red Eye fans appreciate the Gutfeld approach and apparently so does Fox News.

T.V.'s Andy Levy read this and tweeted this to me:

"@AndrewEyedea Greg is the host of Red Eye. I fill in when needed. End of story" (Levy 2012).

"@AndrewEyedea Also, it's perfectly reasonable to prefer Greg to me, but assigning bizarre motives to why I'm different is absurd" (Levy 2012).

As Greg Gutfeld’s star continues to rise the ultimate question becomes: Will Red Eye keep its fans if Andy Levy becomes the permanent host?

I will continue to watch Red Eye. Andy Levy does a great job. He is funny, creative, and clearly a major reason for the show’s success. Another reason is Bill Schulz. Bill is hilarious and maintains a twisted Gutfeldesque sensibility. When Gutfeld is gone and Andy Levy is doing his straight-man routine, it is Bill Schulz that makes the show maintain its surreal qualities. Another layer of talent that gives Red Eye its appeal is Tommy O’Connor. Tommy O’Connor does the funny little segments going in and out from commercials and, from what I can tell, writing and other production. Those things will still be funny when Greg is gone. Don’t despair Red Eye fans, I’m sure Greg will still come down from his platinum throne to visit us lowly Red Eye types from time to time. It’s fine with me. Gutfeld is meant for a larger audience and I am happy to share him with the day walkers.

Greg Gutfeld is a Great Man

Red

Greg Gutfeld has been hosting the show “Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld” for over 4 years and his style is exactly what The Conservative Movement needs.

The Red Eye guys, led by Gutfeld, have a brand of comedy that destroys The Daily Show. The mostly unscripted panel show is loosly based on the MacLaughlin Group on PBS.(they’re still on?) Gutfeld speaks to Reason TV’s Katherine Mangu-Ward about the development of his ideology and his rather unorthodox career.
